The City Reads

Penguin was 70 in 2005

To celebrate 7 cities read 7 Penguin books.

Penguin was the first publisher to bring the city wide read idea to the UK - in 2002 the city of Leeds read Patrick Suskind’s PERFUME, and in 2004 the whole Thames area read Jerome K Jerome’s THREE MEN IN A BOAT in the Great Thames Read. This promotion is predominantly a joint initiative between Penguin and the library sector, continuing the publisher’s ongoing support of libraries. The promotion is also aimed at reading groups – Penguin was the first publisher to establish a website aimed at reading groups, www.penguin.co.uk/readers, and now has 6000 members. The other cities who took part in the birthday promotion were:

Bristol
– Helen Dunmore/THE SIEGE
Oxford – Evelyn Waugh/BRIDESHEAD REVISITED
Nottingham – DH Lawrence/LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER
Northamptonshire – HE Bates/FAIR STOOD THE WIND FOR FRANCE
Hull – Jules Verne/20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Kirklees, West Yorkshire – Zuzu Corder/LION BOY

If you would like further information about what went on in each city, please look at the Penguin Readers Group website www.penguin.co.uk/readers/noticeboard
